Professor Nazir Lone has been appointed Clinical Innovation Lead for HISES, bringing deep expertise in critical care, data science and healthcare innovation to our work across South East Scotland.

Nazir Lone, Professor of Critical Care and Epidemiology at the Usher Institute, has been appointed Clinical Innovation Lead for Health Innovation South East Scotland (HISES), strengthening the organisation’s commitment to accelerating the development, evaluation and adoption of innovations that improve patient care and health outcomes across South East Scotland.

Nazir is also an Honorary Consultant in Critical Care at the Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh, NHS Lothian. His research focuses on improving the quality and outcomes of acute and critically ill people through epidemiology, data science and healthcare innovation, with a particular interest in using routinely collected healthcare data to support safer, more effective care and service improvement.

Alongside his clinical and academic roles, Nazir serves as Director of Research for the Intensive Care Society and previously chaired the Scottish Intensive Care Society Audit Group at Public Health Scotland, where he led national quality improvement programmes using routinely collected data to improve care across Scotland.

In his new role with HISES, Nazir will work closely with clinicians, academia, industry, health and social care partners, and the third sector to identify important challenges, rigorously evaluate emerging innovations and accelerate the adoption of solutions that deliver measurable benefits for patients and services.

Speaking about his appointment, Nazir said:

“Throughout my career I’ve seen how data can help us understand and improve care. I’m looking forward to working with the HISES team to identify and evaluate the most promising innovations that address real clinical needs. By building robust evidence, ensuring strong governance and using patient data responsibly, we can support the adoption of innovations that clinicians and patients trust.”

“Nazir’s appointment is a fantastic addition to the HISES team. He is highly respected across clinical, academic and research communities and brings a deep understanding of how evidence, data and innovation can work together to improve healthcare. His passion for improving outcomes for patients, combined with his collaborative approach, will help us accelerate the development and adoption of innovations that can make a real difference across South East Scotland and beyond.”
